In Australian society, many people agree that the socio-economic class that you are born into will determine the life chances you ultimately have for the rest of your life. Australian society is highly based upon the concept of social stratification which â€Å"refers to the division of the population of a society into strata arranged in a hierarchy† (Aspin, Lois J., 1996: page 39) Sociologists study the social world through paradigms, which are theoretical frameworks such as functionalism and conflict theory. The way that they view society is through these paradigms in which they evaluate the life chances that individuals get throughout their life. Life chances are defined as â€Å"the chances an individual has in sharing in the economic, social†¦show more content†¦Although most Australian households are able to experience the wide range of choices over housing when making decisions about the cost of living, savings and investment, there are many low income househo lds where renting is the only affordable option. â€Å"In 2009-10, 37 percent of men and 34 percent of women aged fifteen years and over living in low income households experienced rental stress.† (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2013). Those considered to be under rental stress, pay more than thirty percent of their gross income towards rent. Conflict Theorists argue that individuals and groups of social classes within society have differing amounts of material and non-material items, such as the homes and the land in which they live. They argue that those who have power within society use this power to exploit groups lower than them, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds. Power can be defined as â€Å"the superior or inferior access an individual has to influence and authority† (Aspin, Lois J., 1996: page 38). In regards to this use of power, conflict theorists would claim that the relationship is unequal and favours those who own their own homes and does not give those who have paid their housing expenses for many years, any right or economic interest with the property. Teenage pregnancy is a new form of epidemic that is sweeping across the nation worldwide. No one can actually point fingers on who is to blame or why this situation has increased in numbers over the past years. As years progress and society changes, people have been adjusting to the fact that teenagers are getting pregnant, and that there is nothing we can do to change it. Although many think that teenagers make mistakes and that pregnancy is an automatic consequence, there is a way to prevent this outcome from happening. By introducing different kinds of sex education programs at an earlier age, the teenage pregnancy rate will decrease. Even though we cannot eliminate the problem, we can educate our teenagers so that this issue can be†¦show more content†¦Therefore, sex education should be taught to students at the age of ten or in the fifth grade. Within the sex education curriculum, fifth graders should begin the journey by learning about their bodies and how it works. Si nce most kids in this age group start going through puberty, they should know why these changes are occurring. The reason is because most parents fear that if their child is exposed to a comprehensive method too early they will engage in that sort of activity. Film Documentary BlackFish Essay The documentary, BlackFish, was directed and written by Gabriela Cowperthwaite and produced by Manny Oteyza. The film was released in the U. S. on January 19th 2013 at the Sundance Film Festival. For this documentary, they filmed at Sea World, San Diego, CA and Puget Sound, Washington. BlackFish was released on CNN on November 2nd, 2013. The documentary is also on Netflix. A majority of the documentary is interviews by ex-Orca trainers at SeaWorld, people who worked at sea world, and even people who captured baby Orca’s in the 70’s. It was an Interactive documentary starting from the various incidents and or accidents that happened to trainers or people who got hurt by these Killer Whales. In 2014 it won the Satellite Award for Best Documentary Film, this award is given by the International Press Academy. The documentary BlackFish went through the process of the most deadly Killer Whale Tillikum and how it got to the water park SeaWorld. This Killer whale Tillikum was taken away from its mother and ocean at age 2, and at the time was 13 feet, which was far larger than any other Killer Whale at that age. Everyone at the park knew this whale was a special talent. When help captive in numerous parks there would be two dominant female orcas that would attack him viciously. On top of that he would perform eight times a day, seven days a week. All this stress caused him to get stomach ulcers. The trainers really cared about this whale, it was always eager to perform, and had a great time performing. However, the real reason Tillikum was so famous was because of the killing of Sea World Trainer Dawn Branchea (Kuo, 2013). The documentary focused on 4 of the ex trainers that worked at the marine parks for the interviews. These trainers were John Hargrove, Samantha Berg, Mark Simmons, and Kim Ashdown. All of them said that information about previous so-called â€Å"accidents† or incidents caused by the whales to trainers was hid from them. And anytime that an accident occurred it was always â€Å"trainer error†. These trainers all said they loved their job and knew Sea World was bullying them and treating these very intelligent mammals awful. Trainers continued to talk about how it was so hard for them to leave because they all really did care for the animals, and didn’t want to know what would happen to these Orca’s when they left; especially Tillikum. The videos throughout the documentary were mostly performances, capturing of the whales in Washington, videos of various violent attacks from whales to the trainers. The audience could be a variety of people, starting with people who plan to go to Sea World, fish lovers, and or anyone who wants to know more about Killer Whales and how they are treated in captivity. This is the case because it really goes behind the scenes and talks with people who experienced and worked with these whales everyday. I learned a lot about sea world, and how they take care of the orcas in a very poor manner. I learned a lot about why these Killer Whales would perform such violent actions towards their feeders. Thus starting from all oceans to having maybe 100 sq. feet to swim around all day. I also learned that these whales have a very developed and intelligent brain. It is pretty crazy to think about being taken away from your mother at a young age and being held captive for the rest of your life. Not only that but using rare genes from Tillikum to breed more whales.
